You might think these activities are designed for young children, but they have far more benefits for older adults than meets the eye. The reality is that play and participating in meaningful activities matters at every age. This national Playday, we’re celebrating the fantastic work our activities teams do to incorporate play and exploration into our resident’s daily lives, and reframing the notion that play is reserved for only the young. Why Play Matters For Older Adults While we often associate the world of play with children, the benefits of playing to body and mind continues across our whole lives. Participating in play and meaningful activities supports mental health, boosts cognitive function, increases social interaction and improves overall mood and wellbeing. Read on to see some of the amazing ways in which our homes at Orchard Healthcare Group are using play and meaningful activities to enrich their resident’s experiences. Cognitive Function Puzzles, games and playful interventions are shown to have great benefits for older adults and individuals with dementia. They keep brains engaged in the present moment, use problem-solving skills and the spontaneous fun engagement with others deepens social bonds. Here at Orchard Care Homes, we love celebrating the people who make our homes such special places to live and work. One colleague whose journey really shows how a career in care can grow and flourish is Roxanne ‘Roxie’ Kershaw, Deputy Manager at Lofthouse Grange and Lodge Care Home. Roxie’s story is a wonderful example of how starting a role in care can lead to a long-term, rewarding career, filled with learning, progression and meaningful moments. Roxie’s journey into care began at just 17 years old, when she joined Middleton Park Lodge as a Domestic Assistant. It didn’t take long for her passion for supporting others to shine through, and by the age of 18, she had progressed into a Care Assistant role. Alongside her day-to-day work, Roxie completed her NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 in Health and Social Care, as well as the Care Certificate. With a natural enthusiasm for learning and a genuine connection with residents, she soon stepped into Senior Care Assistant and Team Leader roles, all within the same home. In 2019, Roxie transferred to Lofthouse Grange and Lodge, continuing her role as a Senior Care Assistant. While working at our Wakefield-based home, she completed her NVQ Level 4 qualification, a key milestone that supported her next step into leadership. Soon after, she was promoted to her current role as Deputy Manager. Reflecting on her journey, Roxie highlights how important development opportunities have been throughout her career: ‘One of my favourite things about working at... Amazing homes, amazing people – that’s Orchard for you! One very talented resident at Cherry Trees Care Home, Terence, has had some brilliant adventures and loves telling stories of his DJ and surfing days; we couldn’t wait to hear more about them! At 73 years-young, Terence is just as interesting, humorous and spontaneous as he always has been. He loves chatting to his friends at Cherry Trees about days gone by and sharing stories of ‘the good old days’. In 1969, at the age of only 16, Terence’s life was already heading in an exciting direction as he moved to Albufeira, Portugal, where he’d spend the next 6 years of his life: “I spoke some Portuguese back then and still remember ‘um pouco’ of it now! ” Sheffield is and always has been known for its nightlife and music scene, and it’s a scene which Terence knows all too well! In 1978, Terence first entered the world of music as a DJ at The Windmill nightclub. He brought a passion for music with him to the club, as well as a natural flair with the people. Although originally Rotherham born and bred, Terence’s adventures eventually took him down to Newquay where he developed a real passion for surfing and spending time in the water. This passion is what led to him owning three different surf shops of his own!   “When I moved down to Newquay, I tried out surfing and loved it! You had to give it a go...... Joan How, 90, has discovered a new chapter of her life at Penwortham Grange and Lodge Care Home. Joan moved into the care home with her now late husband John in 2023. Joan How, 90, has discovered a new chapter of her life at Penwortham Grange and Lodge Care Home. Joan moved into the care home with her now late husband John in 2023. Almost two years later, she and her granddaughter Angela share their journey from the loving care Joan has received to the joy of making new connections in the heart of Preston. The decision to move into a care home was driven by Joan and John’s shared desire to stay together. As John began needing more support with daily life, the couple made the choice to move in, knowing they didn’t want to be apart. “We moved into the home because we wanted to stay together,” Joan says. They remained side by side until John’s health sadly declined, and he passed away. Though Joan describes the heartbreak of losing John, she speaks warmly about the support she received from the team during that difficult time. "Losing John was the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through. But the support I received from the team at Penwortham made all the difference. They were there for me, no questions asked. It’s not just care, it’s kindness,” she shares. Jayne, Activity Coordinator, adds, “Joan is incredibly strong and determined. We just wanted to be a friend to her and try to help her through one of the hardest periods of her life. We take pride in really listening to the people we care for and then putting their wishes and wants into practice.... Eaton Court Nursing Home in Grimsby recently celebrated becoming Veteran Friendly Framework (VFF) accredited, making them one of only two care homes in the area with this endorsement! To reward themselves for months of hard work, the team threw a truly incredible party and welcomed several special guests from the local community. So, what does it actually mean for a nursing home to be VFF accredited? In simple terms, the initiative was launched by the Royal British Legion, Royal Star & Garter, and the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance to raise and enhance the standard of care delivered to veterans residing in care homes throughout England. One of the special guests in attendance of the celebrations was Mayor of North East Lincolnshire, Cllr. Goodwin, alongside her Consort, Mr Barry Goodwin.   In her opening speech, not only did the Mayor express her gratitude to the home for recognising the importance of providing this tailored care, but she also touched on the importance of these personalised care plans for veterans. She highlighted that veterans deserve an approach to care which thoughtfully considers the social, emotional, and physical impact their military service may have had on their lives. Also in attendance were Tracy Frisby (the lead LA officer for Armed Forces Covenant work), WO1 William “Billy” Shepherd (the Naval Regional Engagement Officer for Yorkshire and the Humber) and Rick Anderson (Programme Lead for Older People for NHS Humber & North Yorkshire ICB). Everyone had an amazing time celebrating together, especially thanks to the... If you live in Chesterfield, you may have spotted the unusual sight of a 99-year old man sat in the front of a police car with the blue lights on – well, that was our very own Colin: retired RAF police officer and all-round family man. If you live in Chesterfield, you may have spotted the unusual sight of a 99-year old man sat in the front of a police car with the blue lights on – well, that was our very own Colin: retired RAF police officer and all-round family man. He was able to revisit his time in the police after almost 80 years, thanks to the incredible team at Riverdale Care Home! When residents at our Chesterfield care home were asked what their New Year’s wishes were, Colin told colleagues of his time in the RAF back in 1945, and how he wanted to go for one more ride in a police car before his 100th birthday. Originally stationed in Bückeburg, Germany, Colin was vital in maintaining order during the early post-war years, and provided support in the aftermath of World War II. The heartwarming and emotional tale of his time in the war made his story all the more inspiring, and colleagues were determined to help make his wish come true. Wendy, Activities Coordinator, and Denise, Home Manager, were eager to fulfil his dream, and contacted Derbyshire Constabulary for support. Much to their delight, they were more than happy to support Riverdale’s birthday surprise! PC Katie Robinson and PCSO Karl Marsh from Newbold Station in Chesterfield offered their services for the day, and planned an excursion around Chesterfield that Colin could enjoy. When the police officers arrived, they surprised Colin with his very own Colin the Caterpillar Cake to commemorate his upcoming... There was a wonderful sense of pride at our Rotherham care home as residents, colleagues and local veterans gathered to celebrate a very special milestone: Cherry Trees’ Veteran Friendly Framework (VFF) accreditation! We joined the team to find out how the day went, and why this new certification is vital for veterans in South Yorkshire. At Cherry Trees Care Home, colleagues have been eager to celebrate the news that they’re recognised by the VFF as a veteran-friendly care home – but none more than Sharron, Home Manager, who has been chomping at the bit to get the party started.   “We’ve always had a strong focus on supporting those in the armed forces community, and understand the impact it has on both the veterans and their loved ones. When the opportunity came to become a VFF accredited care home, we were more than happy to apply! ”  The VFF, which is a combined accreditation from the Royal British Legion, Royal Star and Garter and NHS Veterans’ Covenant Healthcare Alliance, looks at 8 standards of care within the home; including ensuring there is a nominated VFF Champion and residents are able to identify themselves as part of the armed forces community in the pre-assessment process. Only after a care home can confidently meet all eight standards are they given their new VFF status, making it a prestigious recognition to achieve. The VFF celebrations began with a wonderful performance from singer, Keeley May, who entertained everyone with much-loved classics from the wartime... Did you know, the RSPB (the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) was an all-women movement created all the way back in 1889? Since then, the movement has been awarded a Royal Charter and passed numerous nature protection campaigns! Here at Orchard, we love getting involved with animals and nature conservation in any way that we can, so participating in Big Garden Birdwatch 2026 was a given. It comes as no surprise that one of the homes to get involved in the event was Riverdale Care Home in Chesterfield. Activities Coordinator Wendy is not only creative, but also very passionate about utilising the home’s outdoor spaces to their full potential. Last year, they made beautiful China cup bird feeders, and this year they have used toilet roll holders, peanut butter and wild bird seed to make delicious snack turrets for the birds – what an excellent way to recycle the cardboard. “It was a sticky and messy activity, but one which the residents loved getting involved in as always. We’ve been watching out the windows as the birds come by for their lunch! ” said Wendy. Another home which created fabulous bird feeders was Middleton Park Lodge Nursing Home in Leeds - they decided to add string and hang them from the trees in a fun, decorative way. The residents were very proud of their creations and love taking part in artistic activities – they’re such a creative bunch! Meanwhile at Green Park Nursing Home, Activities Coordinators Lisa and... After 7 years of being cared for by his wonderful wife, Collette, Albert Wood joined Green Park Nursing Home’s newest Reconnect community on Christmas Eve last year. After hearing about the positive impacts our innovative, person-centred style of dementia care has had, not only on Albert but also on Collette, we were excited to sit down with Collette and the team at Green Park to find out more. Albert and Collette will have been married for an incredible 50 years on their next anniversary in November. Since then, they have dedicated their lives to making amazing memories with each other, travelling the world and finding new hobbies. They are now able to continue making these memories from the comforts of Green Park. “We have been everywhere. We’ve done places like Egypt and America and loved them all. That said, our favourite trip was probably Istanbul. We loved the unique culture and ways of life” added Collette. As Albert’s dementia progressed, their time together changed too and they had to alter their lifestyle. Collette has bravely shared with us the story of Albert’s dementia progression from when he was first referred to the hospital around 7 years ago. “It was obviously very difficult during those first appointments. Albert was only confused sometimes, so there were many times when he couldn’t understand the need to go to his appointments. He would say to me ‘I don’t need to go there, I’m fine’. Over time, of course, his dementia progressed and he needed... ## Care Homes
